Great Lakes Rehabilitation Centre, Uganda
The Great Lakes Rehabilitation Centre was born in Kampala, Uganda because it was realised that there were no
indigenous rehabilitation organisation in the subregion, in spite of the great need for rehabilitation services.
There are
about 40,000 amputees and 400,000 polio affected individuals in the Great Lakes Area. Rehabilitation services cover
about 20% of the need. There are 15,000 amputees in Uganda where only 300 limbs are made per year.

Rehabilitation services were rendered by international NGOs like the International Red Cross who would deliver services
for a specified period of time and then leave at the end of their contracts. Because of the high costs involved, African
Governments can not sufficiently cover costs for rehabilitation because of other medical priorities like HIV/AIDS and malaria.

Great Lakes Rehabilitation Center has a rehabilitation team comprising of a doctor, a clinical rehabilitation officer, a
physiotherapist, 2 orthopedic technologists, a rehabilitation nurse, and other support staff.

An artificial limb costing in Uganda is $350.00 or more. This includes workshop costs and materials, transportation of
client to and from the village, food and lodging while at the center, and one follow-up visit by the team.
